The Costa Brava is one of the most special destinations in the Mediterranean. With landscapes where the sea meets the mountains, medieval villages steeped in history, and internationally renowned cuisine, this region combines tradition, nature, and innovation like few other places in Europe.
In the coming years, the region will also take center stage in world sport with the arrival of the 2031 Ryder Cup, one of the most important golf events on the planet. But beyond elite sport, the Costa Brava also stands out for its rich culture and centuries-old traditions.
One of the most impressive takes place every year during Holy Week: the historic Verges Procession.
La Procesión de Verges, una tradición medieval única
The small village of Verges, nestled in the heart of the Empordà region and just a few kilometers from the Costa Brava, transforms itself every Maundy Thursday to celebrate one of Catalonia’s oldest and most emblematic Holy Week reenactments.
This tradition, which dates back to the Middle Ages, turns the village streets into a historical stage where hundreds of residents participate. Torches illuminating the streets, drums marking the rhythm of the night, and theatrical performances create a unique atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over Catalonia and from various countries each year.
The Dance of Death: the most shocking moment
The most famous moment of the procession is the Dance of Death (Dansa de la Mort), a medieval performance unique in Europe.
Five figures dressed as skeletons parade through the village streets accompanied by the sound of drums. This dance symbolizes the passage of time and reminds us that we are all equal before death, a universal message that has endured for centuries.
The combination of history, symbolism, and staging makes this tradition one of the most unique cultural events of Holy Week on the Costa Brava.
